Rivers In The Desert

by Jade Mogwasi

He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. John 7:38

I have always had a desire to write books and articles right back from childhood. Writing has always been one of the things that came effortlessly.

Surprisingly, every time someone asked me to write an article or story, I would end up in a desert.  I could be flowing nicely until someone asks, then I would be left feeling like I have been asked to climb mount Everest.

One particular time I had been asked to write an article, a dryness immediately set in.  I tried to write a few articles and they all came out miserably.  I woke up one day and decided that I had procrastinated long enough.  I was going to overcome that blockage.

As usual, I started off without a hint of inspiration. Not a cloud ins sight. I sat there pondering, then I remembered something about myself, something I had been taught. That deep within me lies a river of possibilities. As I reflected on that a smile slowly spread across my face.

I felt that River beginning to stir.  Just the mere thought of it and the Spirit of God began to move. As hope welled up in me I began to speak to myself in affirmations and scriptures.

“I am an outlet of God’s supernatural power, I am an expression of God’s love, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me and I cannot be dry.”

The River within me swelled and billowed and started to break its banks. I rushed for pen and paper as the streams begged to be released through writing, the one thing I needed most at the time.

I wrote a nice, simple, and Spirit-filled article. I was rescued. I learned a lesson that day, that my writing ability without the Spirit of God is dead, it’s just like the dry bones in Ezekiel, and it needs the Spirit of God to live.

You might find yourself in the same situation, struggling to write, or even concluding that you do not have it in you to become a writer. You have inside of you a well of possibilities and abilities. I encourage you to tap into it and let it out.

Do you have a burning desire to write?  God has given you all the good things concerning life and godliness. You can do anything through the Spirit of God. Now rise and become the writer that God has called you to be.
